Natural Processed, Dried in a Thin Layer on African Beds
March - July 2019
Nemba Washing Station
The natural process counterpart to our Washed Burundi Nemba, this coffee offers a nuanced, darker fruit toned cup.
Natural Burundi Nemba is a naturally processed coffee, meaning the cherry is left on the bean as it dries on a raised bed. This process bakes in the distinctive cherry-fruit flavors unique to the coffee, enhancing its sweet – sometimes tangy, sometimes floral – fruit notes. For Burundi Nemba Natural Process, this results in a cup with deeper berry notes and crisp lime finish.
We recommend trying Burundi Nemba Natural Process alongside its washed companion to compare how processing influences the flavor development of a coffee.
THE NEMBA GOAT PROJECT
This coffee's unique profile is matched by its unusual story. See, when we bought this coffee, we also bought a herd of goats.
In February of 2017, we committed to guaranteeing farmer's better compensation. We set an industry-leading baseline price for all the coffee we purchase, the only problem was these wonderful coffees from Burundi didn't cost enough. The solution wasn't simply writing a bigger check to our exporter, because our guaranteed price has to go back to farmers, not our trading partners.
Fortunately, Greenco, the company we worked with to bring these coffees in-house, proposed a creative solution: to use the additional funds we wanted to pay for these coffees to purchase goats to be distributed to the communities that grew the coffee. This would allow these farmers to diversify their incomes and help them become more economically stable. And so our pursuit of a coffee and a price worthy of it led us into livestock.
Nearly three years and three herds later, we’re committed as ever to this unusual venture. We never anticipated getting into the goat trade, but we're honored to be building a deeper connection to the farmers in the Nemba community.
