This coffee comes to us from a single farmer: Ema Ordoñez. Ema’s farm, La Piedra [The Stone], is located in the highlands of Tablón de Gómez, in the Aponte region of Nariño, Colombia. Nestled between the Amazonas and Andes geographical regions of Colombia, the region offers a unique microclimate for coffee to grow.
Ema cultivates just 5000 trees, primarily those of the Caturra and Colombia varieties. At 2100 meters above sea level, the cherries are able to mature more slowly, concentrating their sugars as the crop ripens. When conditions like this are paired with the skill and attention of a farmer at Ema’s level, you get coffee that is bursting with sweetness and complexity.
The fate of most coffees like Colombia La Piedra is to be blended in with hundreds of bags of coffee from the same region and sold under an exporter’s brand. Quite often, coffee sold as a single origin is sourced from several different farmers in a geographical area. While this can yield a delicious coffee, it does not offer the same, intimate experience as a single farmer lot. Single origin blending is done for a variety of reasons; sometimes farms are too small to produce an exportable volume of coffee, or there aren’t sufficient organizational structures in place at origin to keep these small lots separate. In order to separate higher quality single farmer lots, cuppers (professional coffee tasters) must taste through every single farmer delivery to separate the good from the truly great. This process takes time, skill and organization, but when it works it can recognize and incentivize individual producers who are growing truly exceptional coffee.
This is the second single farmer lot that we’ve purchased from a female farmer in Tablón de Gómez this year. The first of which, our Colombia Sungo Loma honey processed lot from producer Maria Carlosama, fast become a fan favorite. La Piedra, a washed coffee, has a similar sweet-tart cherry quality and boasts a structured, lime-like acidity with a clean, floral finish.
