About Norandino Cooperative

In specialty coffee, using the word decaf solicits a myriad of responses, most of which are negative. The prevailing stereotype is that decaf coffees are flat, flavorless and unrepresentative of their original characteristics.

But our decaf coffees are a different story.

We use in-season, organic coffees that are decaffeinated with the celebrated "Mountain Water Process" (MWP). Unlike many decafs on the market that employ chemicals in this process, MWP gently removes caffeine in a pure water solution that floats coffee oils to the surface (caffeine included), filters out the caffeine, and reintroduces the original oils to the green coffee. The result is a great coffee, no qualifiers.

We love keeping a single origin decaf coffee on our menu as the global harvests ebb and flow. It gives decaf lovers an opportunity to enjoy the nuances and unique flavor profiles of a given region. Our latest, fresh crop, single origin decaf is from the Norandino cooperative in Peru. A longtime partner of our importing cooperative, Cooperative Coffees, Norandino was started in 1995 by 200 founding farmers in the Piura region of Peru. Its membership now includes over 7,000 families, producing cocoa, and panela (unrefined cane sugar) in addition to coffee.

Norandino has long held an important role in its community. Last year, vast swaths of Peru – including the Piura region – were devastated by massive flooding and landslides after record-breaking rains. While they had to tend to the damage suffered both at their mill and headquarters, Norandino also coordinated relief efforts across the region, working to support their members and the community at large. Facing the aftermath of these heavy rains, their collective spirit has held the community in good stead, and rebuilding efforts continue.
