Located in Ethiopia’s Guji zone, near a kebele (small region) called Kirite, METAD is on the forefront of joining state of the art coffee quality control practices with the longstanding Ethiopian tradition of top tier coffee farming.

Brothers Aman and Michael Adinew, both of whom have been important figures in Ethiopia’s coffee industry, launched METAD with the goal of empowering smallholder farmers with proper training and remuneration. Aman is one of the founders and former presidents of the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange.

In 2014, our Quality Control, Education and Sourcing Coordinator, Alex visited Ethiopia on a grant to study the Ethiopian Coffee industry. On this trip, he visited the Adinew brothers at METAD’s cupping lab, which is the first and only Speciality Coffee Association of America (SCAA) certified cupping lab in Africa. METAD is a great quality control resource for producers in Ethiopia. Here, samples can be evaluated for quality and a link between good farming practices and coffee quality can be forged. Local farmers use METAD for training and education to help them produce higher quality coffee, and coffee professionals from all over Africa come to METAD for training and certification in Q-Grading (an international standard for coffee quality control).

It comes as no surprise that METAD has stringent quality control standards and is producing some of the most consistently delicious coffees from both Yirgacheffe and Guji Zones. Coffees from METAD are always among the best coffees that come across our cupping table each year, and we’re excited to share this year’s crop with you from Kirite.
