Winter Solstice Blend

About Winter Solstice

Long nights and dark days have us reaching for something to keep the cold at bay. A sweet and toasty blend of fresh crop coffees from Peru, Winter Solstice gives us a reason to get out of bed and weather the day. Because while daylight might be dwindling, we’re not ones to hibernate.

This year’s blend features coffees from three of our favorite communities in northern Peru: Flor de Selva, Estrella Divina and El Laurel. These coffees are at the peak of their seasonality and make for a cozy companion to the deep freeze ahead. So bundle up and pour yourself another cup. We’re in for a long winter.

ORIGIN COFFEE LAB

Over the years, we’ve traveled across the country and found ourselves particularly taken with the coffees coming from the farming communities surrounding the city of Jaen, in the Cajamarca region. The diversity of coffees in this area is dizzying and to fully understand the landscape would take a lifetime. That’s why we've partnered with Origin Coffee Lab in Jaen, a small exporter that works with local farmers to produce, source and process truly exceptional coffees.

Origin Coffee Lab is the brainchild of two Peruvian coffee veterans, Alex Julca and José Rivera, aka Pepe. Alex, the son of coffee farmers and the former head cupper for the largest coffee cooperative in Peru, is perhaps the world's foremost expert in coffees in this area. Having cupped roughly 1200 samples a week for the last 16 years, he’s no joke. Pepe also shares deep roots in coffee: the son of a coffee exporter, he grew up in Peruvian coffee cooperatives learning how to bridge the gap between roasters and coffee growers.

Founded with the hope of seeing coffees from their home turf find the acclaim they deserve, Origin Coffee Lab is doing big things to elevate the conversation surrounding coffees from the area. And with their help, we’ve been lucky enough to find some of the best Peruvian coffees we’ve ever tasted.
