Colombia Fondo Paez & Colombia ASCISP

About Winter Solstice

Both coffees in this year's Winter Solstice blend are produced by democratically organized cooperatives of indigenous Colombian people that are producing exemplary organic coffee: Fondo Paez and ASCISP.

The Fondo Paez Cooperative is a long-standing partner with this being our 8th year buying their coffee. Fondo Paez is made up of 550 farmers and is focused on organic, fair trade coffee but only as part of a larger strategy to achieve their ambitious goals. These goals include not only sustainable economy and ecology (the co-op farmers are avid savers of heirloom maize seeds) but preservation of the Paez cultural traditions. The Paez are the largest indigenous group in Colombia, and they have won constitutional control over their ancestral lands.

ASCISP is a producer association made up of the Nasa We'sx, an indigenous community belonging to the Páez and Nasa tribes originally from southern Cauca. All of the 150 members of this cooperative strictly adhere to organic standards aligned with ancient farming principles. Nasa We'sx is located in the higher lands of Gaitania in South Tolima. They produce coffee with an outstanding profile yielding complex coffee that compliments coffee of Fondo Paez well.
