Finca Esmeralda Tunkimayo

Finca Esmeralda Tunkimayo

Beloved, revered, and anxiously awaited, Gesha is perhaps the most famous variety in specialty coffee today.

It all started in 2006, when a farm by the name of Hacienda La Esmeralda submitted coffee from a peculiar looking tree to the Best of Panama competition. The coffee shocked the judges with its extremely unique honeysuckle and floral profile and sparked an obsession with this rare, Ethiopian variety.

This particular Gesha comes from a farm called Esmeralda Tunkimayo, perched in the foothills of the Andes in the Santa Ana region. While it shares a name and a seedstock with the original Gesha of Panama, this exclusive lot is distinctly Peruvian. Set among endless rolling hills and coffee fields, the farm is a hop, skip, and jump from Machu Picchu. Here, in a small plot dedicated to growing Gesha, the plants are carefully tended throughout the year. Harvested at the peak of ripeness, the cherries are processed on the farm under the watchful eye of Raúl Claveri Jarandilla, the farm’s proprietor.

An uncommonly elegant expression of variety and place, this coffee possesses the best qualities of a Gesha as well as the subtle flavors specific to the farm itself. The delicate lime-like acidity and white tea florality that the Gesha variety is known for is balanced by the sweetness and body we love in Peruvian coffees. Enhanced by the terroir of the region and the farm’s dedication to their craft, the result is truly remarkable.
