Beloved, revered, and anxiously awaited, Gesha is perhaps the most famous variety in specialty coffee today. And this year’s limited release from Peru reminds us why.
The story of Gesha as we know it began in 2006, when a farm by the name of Hacienda La Esmeralda submitted coffee from a peculiar looking tree to the Best of Panama Competition. The coffee shocked the judges with its intense honeysuckle and floral profile and sparked an obsession with this rare, heirloom variety.
While this exclusive lot shares a seedstock with the original Gesha of Panama, Yanesha Gesha is distinctly Peruvian. Cultivated in the shadow of the Andes – where steep cloud forests meet the lowlands of the Amazon – this coffee was grown by Cepro Yanesha, an organization of Indigenous Yanesha coffee farmers.
The Yanesha have lived and tended to their land in the Pasco region of Peru for time immemorial. But like many Indigenous communities, the cultivation of coffee on the Yanesha’s land has not always come at their benefit. To farm and claim coffee for their own gain, in their own name, and to support the wellbeing of their own communities challenges the oppressive narrative of the past.
The product of careful cultivation, craft, and the terroir of the Yanesha’s ancestral lands, this coffee is a celebration of its stewards. With the delicate florality of a true gesha and the sweetness and body found in our favorite Peruvian coffees, Peru Yanesha Gesha is an uncommonly elegant expression of variety and place.
